To find a missing ‘child’

October 25, evening, The day after Kali Puja. Leaving her two-month-old ‘child’ asleep in the courtyard, Trisha Karmakar had stepped out for barely 15 or 20 minutes. Not wanting to wake the child up, she had left the door slightly ajar instead of shutting it firmly. When she came back, her child was nowhere to be found, not in the courtyard, not in the house. The child in question, we should mention here, is a Golden Retriever puppy named Lucy.

Having looked everywhere, a desperate Trisha approached Charu Market Police Station. The day after Kali Puja is always an extremely busy one for us, thanks to the need for regular patrolling and other duties. However, the thought of the unprotected little pup roaming the streets, and Trisha’s obvious distress, moved Sub-Inspector Sarbeswar Roy to respond, and under instructions from Charu Market PS OC Inspector Subhash Adhikari, a night-long search began to find the lost Lucy, with her photo being distributed in various neighbourhoods.
Finally, as dawn broke on October 26, a night patrolling team spotted a pup in one corner of a field known locally as Chhoto Rajbari Math, not too far from Trisha’s home. Trembling in fear, the puppy was retrieved and brought back to the PS, where she ran and jumped into Trisha’s lap as soon as she saw her. While the ‘mother’ has conveyed her heartfelt thanks to us for finding her ‘child’, we are just happy to have found Lucy unharmed.
